Roger L. Johannes, 68, of Cold Spring, MN, died peacefully at his home after a long, courageous battle with diabetes and congestive heart failure, on Monday, October 10, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery.
A visitation for Roger will be after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Parish prayers will be at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning in the St. Boniface Church Narthex.
Roger was born in Cold Spring, Minnesota on March 10, 1943, to Ewald and Leona (Faber) Johannes. He married Arlis Hennen on November 22, 1962 in St. Nicholas, Minnesota. He lived his entire life in Cold Spring and served his community in many ways. Roger was a member of the St. Boniface Parish in Cold Spring, and participated in the Faith formation committee as well as the Befrienders Ministry. He owned and operated several local area businesses throughout his life including Rog’s Mini Mart & Sporting Goods for over 20 years. Roger served on the Cold Spring Fire, Cold Spring Police and Stearns County Sheriff Departments, and was a state fire warden. He also served as President of Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, Charter Chairman for Ducks Unlimited, Rich Spring Chapter and President of Cold Spring Sportsman Club.
Roger was an avid sportsman. His passion for the outdoors included hunting, fishing and grilling. In his healthier years, he loved to entertain family and friends, cook and play cards. Throughout his illness, he still had his great sense of humor and always made everyone laugh even during the difficult times.
Survivors include his loving angel and wife of 48 years, Arlis; children, Michelle (Dan) Berckes of Clear Lake, Kim (Mike Roth) Wenner-Roth of Cold Spring, Patrick of Brainerd, Mary Beth (Hebert Castillo) of Conway, SC; grandchildren, Aaron, Neal and Kelsey Athmann, Eric and Sarah Wenner, Hallie and Nolan Johannes; father, Ewald; siblings, Jack (Bess), Karen (Trevor) Evans, Tom, Kathy (Jim) Bell, Randy (Vi), Mark, and many nieces, nephews, special friends, and caregivers.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Leona (2002); son-in-law, Scott Wenner (2001), sister, Mary Ellen Larson (1980), brother, Ronald (1960), and his grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
