Festive Fudge Blossoms

1/4 c. butter, softened
1 (18.25 oz) box chocolate fudge cake mix
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 Tbsp. water
3/4 – 1 c. finely chopped walnuts
48 chocolate star candies

Cut butter into cake mix in large bowl until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg and water until well blended. Shape dough into 1/2” balls; roll in walnuts, pressing nuts gently into dough. Place about 2-inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake in preheated 350° oven for 12 minutes or until puffed and nearly set. Place chocolate star in center of each cookie; bake one minute more. Cool two minutes on baking sheet. Remove to wire racks; cool completely. Makes about four dozen cookies.
