Herbert C. Younkin, 89

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Herbert C. Younkin, 89, of Paynesville will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2012 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.  Herb passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at his home with family by his side after a four year battle with cancer.  Reverend Glenn Krystosek will officiate.  Private burial will be at a later date.

Family and friends may call between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church.

Herb was born on January 30, 1923 in Paynesville, Minnesota to Clarence and Otilla (Hartmann) Younkin.  He served in the US Army 29th Infantry Division as a Staff Sgt. and was awarded a Bronze Star during WW II.   Herb returned home to Paynesville and met Alice C. Hess whom he married on February 9, 1948 at St. Louis Catholic Church.  He lived all his life in Paynesville and owned and operated his trucking business -Younkin Transfer. After retiring in 1985, Herb had a hobby farm with beef cattle, hogs, chickens and his German Shepherd dogs.  He farmed until 2006.  Herb also loved to garden and did so from the age of seven until last year.  He was a member of St. Louis Parish, Knights of Columbus Council  #3820 and the Paynesville VFW.

Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching sporting events.  He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and love of his family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice of Paynesville; children, Sharon (Mike) Mackedanz; Bruce (Kathy), Jef, Tim (Deb) all of Paynesville, Leah (Chuck) Budde of Faribault; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son and daughter-in-law, Scott (Jeanne) in 1993; infant grandson; and many brothers and sisters.

Memorials are preferred.
