The City of Melrose displays Olympic Flag

Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock, a 2000 graduate of Melrose High School, is competing in the 2012 Olympic Games in the Women’s Triple Jump.

City Administrator Michael Brethorst said the city of Melrose will display 23 Olympic flags in the Melrose downtown area and at the Melrose Fire and Ambulance Station from the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games through the end of the Games; July 27 – August 13.

The flags are being flown to recognize the accomplishments of Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock, 2012 Women’s Triple Jump Olympic Team member. Amanda is a 2000 graduate of Melrose Public School and former resident of Melrose. Mayor Tim Vogel said, “This is our way of supporting and congratulating Amanda on her many athletic and personal accomplishments. I ask all Melrose residents, fans, followers and supporters to fly the Olympic flag to show your support for ‘Team Smock’ during the games.”

A table display will be set up at the Melrose City Center showcasing some of Amanda’s many achievements. A signed Olympic flag from Amanda will be on display at the City Center, just like the flags flown throughout town. At the conclusion of the Games, the city will conclude a silent auction selling the 23 Olympic Flags in Amanda’s name. The profits raised will be dedicated to the Melrose park and recreation system. The silent auction for the 23 flags began July 23 and end at 4:30 p.m., Aug. 13, at the Melrose City Center.

The city will accept bids over the phone, by e-mail or in person.
