City of Melrose honors Amanda Smock with 23 Olympic Flags

Melrose City Administrator Michael Brethorst said, “The City of Melrose has received dozens of positive comments regarding the display of the 23 Amanda Smock Olympic Flags that are being flown in the Melrose downtown area and at the Melrose Fire and Ambulance Station.”

The City of Melrose is displaying the flags during the 2012 Olympic Games (July 27 – Aug. 13.) The flags are being flown to recognize the accomplishments of the Amanda (Thieschafer) Smock, 2012 Women’s Triple Jump Olympic Team member.

Amanda is a 2000 graduate of Melrose Public School and former resident of Melrose. Mayor Tim Vogel, “We are so very proud of Amanda and her outstanding accomplishments. She is truly an example of what an Olympian should be. She has excelled at both athletics and academics.”

The City of Melrose is allowing people to purchase these 23 flags though a bid process. The highest 23 bidders will receive one of these autographed flags flown in Amanda’s home town.

All of the profits will be dedicated in Amanda’s name to the Melrose Park and Recreation system. The bidding for the 23 flags will end at 4:30 p.m., Aug. 13, at the Melrose City Center.

Bids can be sent to the City of Melrose via e-mailed to admin@cityofmelrose.com or by calling 320-256-4298.
