CentraCare grants $5,000 to help families with a sick child

Parents of a child suffering from a long-term illness or injury face the added challenge of lost work time and decreased income on top of mounting medical bills. To help offset some of the financial burden, Spare Key — a Minnesota non-profit — helps bridge the gap by making a mortgage payment for Minnesota families. To help launch the program at St. Cloud Hospital, CentraCare Health Foundation awarded Spare Key $5,000.

Spare Key provides mortgage payments to Minnesota homeowners who are current on their mortgage, have had a child hospitalized 14 out of 90 days and are able to demonstrate an increase in expenses or decrease in income, as a result of the child’s hospitalization.

Since 1997, Spare Key has made mortgage payments to nearly 1,500 Minnesota families in more than 320 Minnesota cities, and 77 of the state’s 87 counties. In 2012, nearly $90,000 was given to families of Stearns, Benton and Sherburne counties. In addition to the Foundation, a grant from the Morgan Family Foundation and matching grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation will help more families in need.
