Fr. Elmer Torborg, age 83

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2012 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud for Fr. Elmer Torborg, age 83, who died Wednesday at the St. Cloud Hospital.  Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Cemetery in Richmond.

Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21st at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue Monday at St. Mary’s Cathedral beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Arrangements are with Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.

Fr. Elmer was born in Richmond to Joseph and Mary (Schlangen) Torborg.  He graduated from St. John’s Prep School, St. John’s University and St. John’s Seminary.  Fr. Elmer was ordained June 4, 1955 at St. Mary’s Cathedral and celebrated his First Mass June 5, 1955 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Richmond.  His assignments in the Diocese of Saint Cloud include: associate pastor, Our Lady of Victory Church, June 1955-June 1960 and Chaplain of the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, June 1955-March 1958; pastor, Holy Angels, Saint Cloud, July 1967-July 1970; Saint Paul’s, Sauk Centre, July 1970-July 1982; Saint Mary Help of Christians, Saint Augusta, July 1982-July 1990; Saint Lawrence, Duelm, July 1990-September 2000; Saint Patrick, Minden, April 1993-September 2000.  Father Elmer retired September 30, 2000.  After retirement he moved to Assumption Court in Cold Spring where he assisted with the chaplain duties and led many prayer groups.  Fr. Elmer enjoyed playing piano and guitar.  He loved to take part in sing-a-longs at family gatherings and with the residents at Assumption Campus.

Survivors include brothers; Lee (Mary) of St. Cloud, Harold (Jane) of St. Cloud, Ralph (LaVerne) of Minnetonka, and Melvin (Betty) of Richmond; 24 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Fr. Lawrence Torborg.
