Richard Sobotka, (known as Dick) of Clarissa, passed away on November 27, 2012, at the CentraCare Health System in Long Prairie. Funeral services for Richard were held on Saturday, December 1, 2012, 12 noon, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa with Father Peter VanderWeyst officiating. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Clarissa.
Richard was born February 11, 1921 in Oak Park, Illinois to August & Marie (Stastny) Sobotka. After attending 4 years of college at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, he enlisted in the US Army in September of 1942 where he served in 3 campaigns. Richard was honorably discharged in October 1945. On February 7, 1948, Richard married Josephine Baker at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside, Illinois. Richard and Josephine moved to Minnesota in 1950 and began farming. He was the Todd County Assessor for 23 years. Richard was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa, St. Joseph’s Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post #213 in which he was the Commander in 1962. He served on the Clarissa School Board for several years.
Richard is survived by his wife Josephine, children: David (Debi) Sobotka of Long Prairie, Tim (Cathy) Sobotka of Lakeville, Mark (Joanie) Sobotka of Sauk Centre, Rick Sobotka of Stewartville, Kathy (Steve) Yates of Clarissa, Cheryl Doerr of Sauk Centre, Karen (Tom) DeFrance of Swanville, Monica Sobotka of St. Louis Park, 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Frank Sobotka, Marie Masek and Rosalie Will.
