Walter F. Zumwalde, 83 died Thursday, December 27, 2012 after a brief stay at Assumption Home in Cold Spring.
Wally was born on February 16, 1929, in Richmond, MN, the son of Mathias and Mary (Bolfing) Zumwalde. For many years he worked with his father, and later his brother, at Zumwalde Construction before and after a stint in the U.S. Army Signal Corp from 1951-1953. On September 29, 1954, Wally married Dorothy Spanier at St. Catherine’s Church in Farming, after which they made a good life together in Richmond. In addition to his woodworking craftsmanship, Wally was a Rural Letter Carrier, retiring in 1989. An avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan, Wally also enjoyed playing cards and put together many puzzles. He loved to fish, enjoyed old time music, and was known far and wide for his sweet tooth. Wally was an active member of AA and his family was proud of his 32 years of sobriety. He was also a member of the American Legion, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic United Financial, a retired member of the Richmond Fire Department, and past board member of the Rich Spring Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Stephanie (Tom) Davis, Matt (Brenda) Zumwalde, Tony (Mindy) Zumwalde, and Hallie (Josh) Washnieski; grandchildren, Julie, Amanda, Neil, Angela, Rachel, Sarah, Daniel, Lisa, Quinn, Bodin and Jude; five great-grandchildren; and his brother Ralph (Linda) Zumwalde.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mathias and Mary, as well as sisters Alvina and Alma.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, on Monday, December 31, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the church prior to mass. Interment will be in the Richmond cemetery. Arrangements by Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.
