Gerald Sweeney, 91, of Hewitt went to be with his Lord on January 16, 2013 surrounded by his family at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 19, 2013; 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bertha, MN, burial was held at Moran Riverside Cemetery.
Gerald was born to James & Mary (Adamietz) Sweeney on August 8, 1921 and spent his youth growing up in Moran Township. He served his country in the Marine Corps during WW2 and was injured in the Pacific Theatre in 1944, receiving a Purple Heart.
Gerald married Thelma Peyer on November 9, 1944 and to this union four children were born. He was a lifelong farmer and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, first as a brakeman and then as a conductor.
After Thelma’s death, Gerald married Esther Crooker and upon their retirement from farming they moved to Hewitt.
Gerald is survived by his children, Michael (Darcy) of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Dennis (Linda) of Staples, Renee (Larry) Hanson of Hatton, North Dakota, Glenna (Ronald) Woerdehoff of Long Prairie, 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Donald of Bemidji, David of Staples and special friend Grace Steinkraus.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wives Thelma and Esther, brothers Robert, John, James, Hughie, Cletus and 2 sisters Veronica and Mary.
