A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Peace United Church North in Long Prairie, MN, for Walter Knudsen, age 92, of Long Prairie, MN. Rev. Gary Taylor will officiate and burial will be at Pioneer Lutheran Cemetery in White, SD at 1 p.m. Tues., Jan. 15th. Friends and family may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie, and 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at  the church.

Military Honors will be provided by Long Prairie V.F.W. Post #1140 and American Legion Post #12.

Walter Knudsen was born on August 28, 1920 in Bruce, South Dakota to the late, Einer and Ann Marie (Nelson) Knudsen. He graduated from Brookings, SD, High School in 1940. Walter was united in marriage to Irene Thompson on Nov. 10, 1943, and together they farmed near Bruce, SD. Walter was inducted into the U.S. Army in February of 1945, and was part of the invasion force going to Japan when the Atomic Bomb was dropped, ending the war. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Walter and Irene eventually moved to Minneapolis, and Walter started work with the U.S. Postal Service in 1957. Irene M. Knudsen died in 1982, and after his retirement in 1984, Walter was united in marriage to Irene E. Hetland on Dec. 1, 1984 and they settled in Long Prairie. Together they enjoyed taking trips to Texas during the winter. Walter also enjoyed fishing, taking drives in the country, and playing cribbage. He also made regular trips to the casino. Walter lost Irene E. Knudsen in 2005.

Walter was a member of American Legion Post #12 and the 40 & 8 club. He participated for many years with the Legion’s color guard, providing honors for his fallen comrades.

Walter is survived by his sons, Allan (Linda) Knudsen of Champlin, MN, and Kevin (Jackie) Knudsen of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Sara) Knudsen, Kristin (Jeremy) Janku, Julie (Chuck) Wolbert, and Kolleen Barva-Hamlin; great grandchildren, Anastasia, Logan, Vada, and Chuck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Irene M. and Irene E. Knudsen; twin sons, Wallace and Paul, and son, Gary Knudsen; brother, Svend Knudsen; and sister, Betty Thompson.
