Rachel I. (Gathje) Warren, age 91, of Belgrade, MN, and formerly of Elrosa, died peacefully on Saturday, February 16th at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade. Funeral services were held, Tuesday, February 19th at 11:00 am, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten, with Pastor Bryant Kaden officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre, MN. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home, Brooten, MN.
Rachel I. Warren the daughter of Jacob and Maria (Erichson) Gathje, was born on December 14, 1921 in Stewartville, Minnesota. She grew up in Stewartville, and graduated from Stewartville High School. While growing up, Rachel attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville. Following high school, Rachel met and eventually married Frank Warren on March 9, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville, MN. The couple made their home on a farm in Spring Valley, MN. Over the years, the two made several moves, living in Waterloo, IA; Canoga Park, CA; Rochester, MN; Gladbrook, IA; Racine, MN; Elrosa, MN, Brooten, MN and Belgrade, MN.
Rachel was employed at Hans and Annie’s Coffee Shop, Butch’s Café, and Bayer Grocery in Elrosa for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, Joy Circle, Quilting Circle at Trinity Lutheran, and was a member of the Red Hat Ladies of Brooten. Rachel had a passion for quilting and cooking. Rachel showed her family her love of quilting by making all of her children and grandchildren a beautiful quilt. While cooking, one of her specialties was making “flat” pancakes the size of a dinner plate for her grandchildren. She will also be remembered for her divine divinity which she would make every Christmas season, the Thursday special of Spare Ribs and Sauerkraut at Butch’s Café, and the great pastry chef she was while working there. Rachel was also known for her ever present sense of humor and her beautiful flower garden in front of her house which was enjoyed by all who lived in and around the town of Elrosa.
Rachel is survived by her sons Kenneth (Judy), of Garland, TX; Paul (Cindy), of Owatonna, MN; daughters, Kathleen (Eugene) Mullenbach of Racine, MN; Maria (John) Inselman, Steilacoom, WA; Rosalie (Robert) Helland of Minnewauken, ND; Gloria (Thomas) Roelike of Long Prairie, MN; Suzanne (Keith) Disrud of Glenwood, MN; Curly (Mickey) Braun of Belgrade, MN; 26 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Emile Winters of Rochester, MN; and Florence Haack of San Diego, CA.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank (1998); one daughter, Deborah Warren, Great grandchildren Delaney Braun, Tate Meinert, Ameila Inselman, Katie Rose Mullenbach, and 2 sons-in-law.
