Ethel, the youngest of nine children, was born at home June 11, 1910, to Arnt and Helena (Lundquist) Erickson in Reynolds Township, Todd County, Long Prairie, Minnesota. Ethel was baptized and confirmed at the Reynolds Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1926 she graduated from eighth grade at the District 15 country School. April 14, 1932, Ethel married Frederick Christiansen in Long Prairie, Minnesota. They had three children: Helen, Louella and Ardean.
Ethel loved to cook and bake. She was known for her apple pies and crocheting. In 1965 Ethel moved to Long Prairie and was an employee of Cathedral Press for fourteen years. She had a special way with children and enjoyed babysitting. Ethel was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran and Reynolds Baptist Ladies Aids. She looked forward to Senior Citizens, to visit with friends and playing bingo.
Since 2004 Ethel has lived at the Centra Care Health System Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Activities kept Ethel on the go. She enjoyed bingo and playing in the “Happy Gang” band. When in her room she kept busy doing her “paper work” – Word Search. Her mind was sharp. In 2006 Ethel was voted the Valentine Queen at the Nursing Home.
Survivors include her children: Helen (Tom) Differt, Long Prairie, Louella (Edgar) Smith, Moorhead, Ardean (Patricia) Christiansen, Long Prairie; seven grandchildren: Cynthia (Differt) Byler, David Differt, Connie (Christiansen) Dullum, Carrie (Christiansen) Fowler, Colleen (Christiansen) Lommen, Curtis (Johnelle) Christiansen, Craig (Kayla) Christiansen; thirteen great grandchildren: Alexandra and Caitlin Byler, Corey Johnson, Audrey Dullum, Megan, Emma and Austin Fowler, Sam Christiansen, Amber Christiansen, Hannah, Sarah, Alex and Bailey Christiansen.
Ethel is also survived by her nieces: Dawn Fruetel, Evelyn Stoerzinger, Patricia Sweet, Connie Byrnes, Betty Mikell, Jeanette Alsleben, Marleen Anderson and nephews: Roy Lee, Robert Erickson, Robert and Larry Gustafson.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings: Elsie Lee, Arthur, Arvid, Helmer, Joseph, Rudolph and two infant sisters.
