Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Thursday, August 8, 2013 at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Donald R. Zinter, age 82, of Long Prairie who died Saturday at CentraCare Health Systems of Long Prairie. The Rev. Bill Bakewicz will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie. Friends may call from 4-8 pm, Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the American Lutheran Church and one hour prior to services on Thursday. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home-Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.
Donald R. Zinter was born December 18, 1930 in Long Prairie, Minnesota, to Richard and Mary (Gaulke) Zinter. He graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1948. He served in the United States Army where he was a construction foreman with the rank of Corporal. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
He married Janice Larsen in 1955 and they bought a farm in Long Prairie. They had three children, John, Robert, and Susan. Janice passed away in 1959. On June 1, 1962, he married Ruth Knable at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, and later they had Paul.
Donald and his brother, David began growing potatoes in 1959. They were known as Zinter Brothers Potato Farm. Donald and David were innovators in the irrigation and potato industry in Todd County. He was a member of the Central Minnesota Irrigators Association and Area 2 Potato Growers.
Donald loved farming, watching the History Channel, and talking about his army experiences. He enjoyed family events and watching his grandchildren grow up. Donald was a humble and generous person and shared the harvest with others. Over his lifetime of farming he met and touched many lives.
Donald is survived by his wife, Ruth, children, John (Connie) of Long Prairie, Robert (RoseAnn) of Long Prairie, Susan (Darrell) Frykman of Elbow Lake, MN and Paul (Deanna) of Long Prairie, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother, David (Beverly) of Long Prairie, sister, Jeanette (Wally) Anderson of Blaine, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Janice. He will be greatly missed.
Casket bearers will be Michael Zinter, Matthew Zinter, Nathan Zinter, Jared Frykman, Andy Becker, and Keith Ferris. Honorary pallbearers will be Joshua Zinter, Caleb Zinter, Meagan Ferris, Sarah Becker, and Rebekah Zinter.
