Alvin Edward Skillings, 90, of Clarissa, passed away on September 11, 2013, at the Central Todd Care Center in Clarissa. Funeral services for Alvin were held on Monday, September 16, 2013, 11:00 a.m., at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Clarissa with Pastor Melissa Ehrhardt officiating. Interment was held at Evergreen Cemetery, Clarissa.
Alvin was born June 6, 1923, in Long Prairie to Elbert & Henrietta (Joarnt) Skillings. He attended country school. Alvin enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served on the USS Armadillo in the Battle of Okinawa.
Alvin married Bonnie Louise Leagjeld in Clarissa on October 10, 1948. He worked at the Midland Station in Clarissa for 39 years. Alvin was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He was a lifetime resident of Clarissa.
Alvin was a wonderful dancer; he enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Alvin was a soft spoken, true gentleman with a heart of gold. He will be remembered for his willingness to help all of his friends and neighbors.
Alvin is survived by his children: Russell (Leslyn) Skillings of Conrad, Montana, Kathy (Ken) Drevlow of Clarissa, Steve (Becky) Skilling of Browerville, Paul (Gwen) Skillings of Wadena, Joel (Jackie) Skillings of Minneota; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; siblings: Bob Skillings, Duane Skillings and Rose Mercer.
Alvin is preceded in death by his parents; wife Bonnie, brothers: Elbert Jr., Larry, Ernie, Arnie, Wesley (Smokey); sisters: Dorothy, Pat, Henrietta (Hank) and Esther.
