Apple Cream Cake

1 c. chopped walnuts
2/3 c. shortening
1-1/3 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. all spice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. flour
6 c. apples, peeled and chopped

In frying pan, toast walnuts until fragrant, 5-7 minutes. Cool. In large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time; beat well after each egg. Sift together dry ingredients. Beat into sugar mixture. Fold in apples and nuts. Mixture will be stiff. Spread into greased 9×13 inch pan.

In sauce pan, stir together:

1-1/2 c. packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
1/2 stick butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. water

Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Pour this hot sauce evenly over batter. Do not stir. Bake 1 hour. Serve warm with 1 cup cream, whipped, or Cool Whip.
