Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville, MN for William “Bill” Birk, age 88, who died Tuesday at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Parish prayers will be at 7:00 p.m. followed by a rosary with Catholic Order of Foresters. Visitation will continue from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., Friday morning at the funeral home.
Bill was born in Rockville to Peter and Margaret (Gossler) Birk. He married Alvina Thul on November 27, 1946 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring. Bill served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a foreman in many quarries for the Cold Spring Granite Company for forty plus years. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Bill loved his faith, family and friends. He is a retired member of the Rockville Fire Dept. and a member of Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Alvina; children, Dave (Marilyn), Allan (Marcia), Diane (Jim) Browning, Karen (Mike) Hunstiger, and Michele Birk; son-in-law, Vance Porwoll; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Porwoll; siblings, Sylvia, Theresa, Irma, Rita, Christine, Albert, Gerhart, John, and Joseph.
