Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2013 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MN for Raymond “Ray” Thelen, age 90. He died Wednesday at his home where he was born and lived his entire life. Burial will be in the St. Martin Parish Cemetery.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Wenner Funeral Home in Richmond. Parish prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary with the Paynesville Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Monday morning at the funeral home.
Ray was born in St. Martin to Anton and Elizabeth (Holthaus) Thelen. He married Bernie Theis on July 24, 1965 in St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Farming. Ray farmed for his entire life and worked for the Stearns County Highway Dept. He was a member of St. Martin Parish, Paynesville Knights of Columbus, and a proud member of the St. Martin Band for over 50 years. Ray was known throughout the area for his skills as a well-witcher, his stories of the depression, his childhood memory of prohibition, and of course his alternative fishing methods.
Survivors include his wife, Bernie; children, Tim Thelen, Kim (Kevin) Orbeck and their children, Katherine, Jack and Samuel, Tony Thelen, Pete (Jill) Thelen and their children, Kylie, Ava & Shelby, Jason (Susan) Thelen and their children, Nathaniel and Sarah; sisters, Maddie (Arnold) Wehseler, Lidwina (Ben) Kaiser, and Gert Sievert.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lorraine Ruprecht, Mary Moser-Hettwer, and Arnold “Slim”; brothers-in-law, Carl Ruprecht, Ervin Moser, John Hettwer, and Tom Sievert.
