Herman Schaefer

Herman Schaefer, a resident of St. Martin, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at home.
A funeral service was held Dec. 7 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Burial was in the parish cemetary. Visitation was from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the St Martin Parish Hall in St. Martin. Parish prayers were at 4:00 p.m. followed by a rosary with St. Joseph Society, St. Martin Catholic United Financial and the Lions Club. Visitation continued from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the St. Martin Parish Hall.
Herman was born to Peter and Mary (Mohs) Schaefer. He married Alice Hemmesch on August 27, 1957 in St. Margaret Church, Lake Henry. Herman farmed all his life until his retirement. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, bowling, softball, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. Herman was a member of the St. Martin Parish which he served as Parish Trustee, Reader, Usher, Mass Server and in the Funeral Choir. He also played trumpet and drums in the St. Martin Band, played the accordion for enjoyment, was a treasurer for the St. Martin Lions and sold Vigortone and Ration Maker Feed and went on a lot of trips, was on the Board of Albany Mutual Insurance, Pork Producers, AMPI and Farming School Board
Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Jerry (Deb) Schaefer of St. Martin, Allen Schaefer (Patty Meyer) of St. Martin, Barb (Kerry) Mergen of Farming, Joan (Duane) Schmitt of St. Martin, Donna (John) Hoeper of Alexandria, Dean Schaefer (Bonnie Holthaus) of St. Martin, Steve (Karen) Schaefer of St. Martin; brother, Math Schaefer; sisters, Margaret Kinzer, Mary Ann Lauer; sisters-in-law, Verena Schaefer, Mary Jane Schaefer; 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Henry (Ida) Schaefer, Frank Schaefer, Clara (Leo) Burg, Norbert (Leona) Schaefer, Susan (Joe) Kuhl, Nick (Theresa) Schaefer, Gertrude (Joe) Hellmann, Theresa Schaefer, Ben Schaefer; brothers-in-law, Ervin Kinzer and Romuald Lauer.
