Randy Schreifels, Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer, announces that absentee balloting for the Jan. 28, 2014, Commissioner District 5 special election began on Dec. 13.
January 27, 2014, is the last day to cast an absentee ballot in person.
With Commissioner District 5 located primarily in the western part of the county, the city of Melrose was added as an absentee ballot location for the convenience of the voters. For this special election only, ballots for all of the precincts in Commissioner District 5 will be available for absentee balloting at the Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office and the city of Melrose.
The Clerk’s Office in the city of Melrose is located at 225 First St. N.E., Melrose. The phone number for the Melrose City Clerk is (320) 256-4278. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office will also be open for absentee balloting on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and until 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27.
The Auditor-Treasurer’s office is located in the Stearns County Administration Building, Room #148, 705 Courthouse Square, St Cloud. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office will also be open for absentee balloting on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and until 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan.27.
Absentee balloting may also be done via mail. You can obtain an absentee ballot application online at www.co.stearns.mn.us, or contact the Auditor-Treasurer’s office and an application will be mailed or faxed to you. Return your absentee ballot application by mail to the Auditor-Treasurer’s office at the above address, or fax it to 320-656-3916, and an absentee ballot will be mailed to you.
For this Special Election, in order to vote by absentee ballot, you must fulfill one of the following reasons for needing an absentee ballot:
1) Absence from precinct on Election Day
2) Illness or disability
3) Religious discipline or observance of religious holiday
4) Service as an election judge in another precinct
5) Eligible emergency declared by the governor or quarantine declared by the federal or state government
