Melrose, Swanville schools to receive $2,500 grants, maybe $7,500 more

Melrose and Swanville public schools are among 14 school districts that will receive $2,500 from Toyota with a chance at an additional $7,500. The prizes from Toyota’s 2014 “Drive For Education” contest will be awarded at the upcoming Minnesota State Hockey Tournament in St. Paul, with the top two schools eventually being awarded additional grants worth $7,500 each.

Melrose will use the grant for bathroom repairs and Swanville will use the money for a new scoreboard.

All winners will be acknowledged during KSTC-TV/Channel 45’s coverage of the Boys’ Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, March 5-8. KSTC will also host an online voting portal where people can vote for their favorite schools, in order to determine the two grand prize winners.

Per the rules of the contest, students had to write a short essay specifically detailing how their school could use the $2,500 and $10,000 prizes to enhance education or related amenities, with specific monetary earmarks.

“You could feel the school pride emanating from many of the nominations this year,” said Kevin Fletcher, general manager of the Chicago Region for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “It’s tremendous to see this level of passion from young people, for the betterment of their schools.”
