Jimmy Buffet concert June 19 to be broadcast live to Long Prairie Drive-In

On Thursday, June 19, the Long Prairie Drive-In Theater will be host to a unique event.

Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will be performing at Coyote Drive-In in Fort Worth, Texas, but the event will be broadcast via DirecTV to participating, digitally-quipped drive-ins across the nation.

Tickets for the event are $18 per person, with a minimum of $36 for one car. Organizers are encouraging those wanting to attend to buy their tickets in advance at liveatthedrivein.com or at the Long Prairie Drive-In Theater concession stand.

Parking spots will be on a first come, first served basis, but attendees  will be able to bring their lawn chairs and move up closer to the screen.

The concert is being dubbed as “Live at the Drive-In” and was conceived by the owners of the Coyote Drive-In, Brady and Brandi Wood. Brady Wood described the event as the biggest of its kind ever attempted.

The performance allows Buffett to reach fans in secondary and tertiary markets that, Wood says, “are often out of range of his normal tour.”

Gates will open at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., a Twin Cities group, the Island Time Steel Drum Band will perform at the pre-show tailgate party at the Long Prairie Drive-In.

The Long Prairie Drive-In, 24257 Riverside Drive, Long Prairie, is one of 170 digitally remodeled drive-in theaters in the nation capable of broadcasting the concert. The list of drive-ins was to be released Friday.

With technological advancements in digital projection and satellite delivery,  drive-in theatres are now capable of presenting a live concert performance in high definition.

Jimmy Buffet “Parrot Heads” have large groups coming from Detroit Lakes, the Metro area and even North Dakota, said Michelle Claseman, owner and manager of the Long Prairie Drive-In. “This should really be a fun night at the drive-in as we will also be having a contest for the best beach-themed car/group to add to our ‘Island’ atmosphere.”
