University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting its annual Stearns County Dairy Field Day on Wednesday, August 12 from 10:00am-12:30pm. The Field Day will be hosted by High Point Dairy, owned and operated by Joe and Kim Engelmeyer. The farm is located at 31414 County Road 17 Melrose, MN.
Joe and Kim purchased and took over the farm from Sam and Jane Salzl in fall 2011; Joe had worked on the farm for two years and after Sam and Jane decided to sell the farm he and his wife purchased it. Joe and Kim had previously milked cows in a barn rented from Kim’s parents. While under Sam and Jane’s ownership, the farm was updated in 1998 with a tandem parlor installed in the tie stall barn and a freestall barn was built. The herd was also doubled at this time. The Engelmeyers now milk 105 cows and farm 260 acres of corn, alfalfa, barley, and peas. Since taking over the farm, Joe and Kim have added fans, tunnel ventilation, and baffles in the freestall barn. They also have started using the Cow Manager program from Select Sires and have been able to nearly double their pregnancy rate.
The event will include a background on the farm and how the Salzls and Engelmeyers conducted a non-family farm transfer. There will also be discussions about starting the farm transfer planning process led by Emily Wilmes, an update on the Margin Protection Program from the 2014 Farm Bill led by Jim Salfer, and a local crop update from Dan Martens. There will also be a tour of the farm’s facilities.
This event is offered free of charge and will include a lunch, served by the Pelican Peak 4-H Club. RSVPs are not required, but are encouraged to help with the meal count. You can RSVP by calling Emily Wilmes at 320-255-6169.
